Who I Am
I am Onyx Rose, a transformational artist and performer with mixed Irish and Indigenous heritage. I’m passionate about sharing my music as both my authentic self-expression and a tool for influencing culture through medicine songs in the form of soulful dance music. I sing, write lyrics, and dance, crafting melodies that express the beauty of the real, raw human experience from an elevated, inspiring perspective.I live with my husband, raising our two homeschooled kids, off-grid, in the Qathet region of coastal BC.
What I Do
I write songs about the beauty and sacredness of the real, raw human experience from an elevated perspective. I’m passionate about sharing my music as both my authentic self-expression and a tool for influencing culture through medicine songs in the form of soulful dance music.. I sing to inspire others to come home to their own magic.
Why I Do It
I’m compelled to share my music, it’s my deepest passion beyond raising my kids. I do this to influence culture for the greater good, nourishing my heart while encouraging others to follow suit. I hold a high standard for music that aligns with my goals and messages. I’m committed to expressing myself and influencing culture through song.
Who I Do It For
I do it for myself, my kids, and the collective.
My Journey
My mother said I would sing to myself before I could talk. My father showed me the way with his Indian songs. Most nights we spent together, he’d sit by the fire, playing his drum. My parents both loved to dance. Most of my childhood play revolved around performing in some way. I would spend hours dancing, acting out stories, and singing along to the music I’d hear. I feel I am an innate performer; it feels like my natural state of being.
Life moved forward, and I lost track of my dreams and passions. In 2022, I wrote my first song. I wanted to communicate a message of hope and unity as an answer to all the fear and disharmony that emerged from COVID. The first songs I wrote were all about community, unity, hope, and personal and collective power. Then I looked within and decided to write about my personal experiences and share all aspects of myself through song, to show all the sides of me.
Although I had lost track of my personal dreams and aspirations of performing and singing, I had kept my deep desire to help others and to understand human nature. I’ve studied many things, including nutrition, history, religion, spirituality, ancestral healing, developmental psychology, interior design, Feng Shui, physiological birth, plant medicine, and yoga. I use all of this to inform the songs I write.
Turning Point
At the beginning of 2024, I got very ill. I wondered if it was how it felt when we die; I was so low in energy with so much body discomfort. I had very little energy, so I asked myself what I really wanted to do with the energy I have. It helped me get clear on two priorities: raising my kids and creating music to influence culture, to contribute to goodness in the world for my children. It helped me say no to many things that were not supporting these two interconnected priorities. It made space for clarity and determination.
