Onyx

I love to inspire, elevate energy and create beauty. I have been given many names and rest in the space of my own chosen name. Most of my ancestors are from Ireland, England and from the prairies of Alberta Canada - the Chipewyan Dene people. I honour them all. I honour the land that that I am blessed to live on. I cherish life and do my best to keep things simple with my family. My priorities are my family, community and music.
A bit about me...
My musical journey...
Origins:
My mother says I would sing before I could talk. She said I would sing to myself as an infant at nap times. My father loved to sing and would sing me his "Indian Songs" and play his drum. If he didn't have a drum he would play a metal bowl or pot. Both of my parents had strong disempowerment themes in their lives. My father was a "Half Breed" and my mother was a girl in the man's world of growing up in a logging camp with an older brother that didn't value her. I feel that part of my singing was gifted to me as through their strong desires to be seen and heard. I feel it is to liberate and empower myself and change the energies of these family stories. As I do this work it shifts the energy of the disempowerment stories that many of us share.
I always loved to sing. It has always felt so good. I was passionate and always sang as a young child up until I was a teen. I thought I'd do something with it until I lost my voice for a year from strep throat when I was 18. It took me a long time to come back to finding my voice again. To anchor in my desires to express, transform and empower.
Present Expression:
Two years ago I was called to bring people together to pray. I tried to unite people with various beliefs to join together in prayer. I had meetings with people in my community and many conversations. I opened some local events with my own versions of prayer. And then I decided that I would write music as prayers. I do this work for myself, my family, my lineage, my community, the collective, and for love, truth, beauty and the earth.
